* Please be warned this discusses miscarriage *
My heart is bursting with happiness as the days grow nearer for this soon to be family of 3. I’ve known Beth my whole life—technically longer than my own sister. From a young age we were attached at the hip, so we dubbed ourselves NBBWAPTS —Not-Biological-But-We-Are-Probably-Twin-Sisters. I can’t help but chuckle looking back at our younger years when it comes to marriage and kids. I was the one who wanted to get married and have kids. Beth on the other hand, wanted none of it. Until she met her partner; then everything changed. Not long after meeting him she dreamed of married life and starting a big family. Meanwhile, I realized upon entering adulthood how expensive life is. So for now my partner and I have the fur babies (which means I get to photograph all the cute babies and cuddle them more! -when not dealing with COVID).
I’ve known for a few years now kids were in the plans for the two of them. When she got pregnant in 2019 only to have a miscarriage a few weeks later, my heart broke for her. We’ve had many conversations about the pain and heartache that comes with the loss of a child. On Christmas Day, I was greeted with some amazing news: Beth told me she was pregnant again!! I was honored when she asked me to be her maternity photographer in Kelowna. After months of planning out the wardrobe and location, we arrived at 32 weeks and were finally able to do her maternity session for her rainbow baby. Here's what she had to say about the photoshoot when sharing some of the photos with friends and family:
"I had been looking forward to that moment since the day I found out I was pregnant. I asked my best friend on Christmas Day if she would help us capture those sweet moments with our rainbow baby and was overjoyed when she said yes. When I lost my first pregnancy last fall, she was instrumental in my healing and I knew there was nobody else I would want to do the photo shoot with. This pregnancy has been filled with a lot of anxiety, especially around certain milestones as each one is a stark reminder of what we didn’t get to have the first time around. This photo shoot was the perfect way to celebrate two lives that I will cherish forever."
Beth has been the first person close to me who’s been pregnant, and it’s been a fascinating journey learning alongside her the different stages of baby’s growth each week. Seeing the strong connection a mother already makes with her unborn baby is incredible and the love Beth already gives her makes me grin so much every time I hear a new story. These maternity photos truly capture the happiness and hope this baby has brought. You can see it in her own grin, she just couldn’t stop smiling! I’m so honored and thankful to have been able to photograph this incredible milestone for her and I can’t wait to meet their little rainbow babe at the end of August!
